The Argent Tournament

The Black Knight

The Black Knight: Part One

This quest chain is available after you complete The Argent Tournament, a simple travel quest from Justicar Mariel Trueheart, in the Argent Pavilion (the large tent in the southwest corner of the Argent Tournament Grounds), to Magister Edien Sunhollow [76,24], in the Sunreaver Pavilion (the Horde tent in the southeast corner of the grounds). You must be at least level 77 to begin this chain.

All of the quests in this chain start and end with Crusader Rhydalla, in the center of the Argent Pavilion.

  1. The Black Knight of Silverpine?
Retrieval quest to Valgan's Field in Silverpine Forest for a Dusty Journal.

    1. Go to the Undercity.
    2. Exit the main (north) gate of the city. Go left (west) on the main road, and follow the road as it curves south into Silverpine Forest.
    3. Before you cross the river, there will be a farm on the left (to the east) - Valgan's Field.
    4. The farmhouse is on the south side. (See Map1.) Enter the front door, and turn left.
    5. Pick up the Dusty Journal.
    6. Return to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:

  2. The Seer's Crystal
Retrieval (quest) to get a Seer's Crystal from an Unbound Seer in Crystalsong Forest.

    1. Go to Dalaran, and proceed to the Violet Gate - the building at the eastern corner of Runeweaver Square.
    2. Use the violet crystal to teleport down to the Violet Stand in Crystalsong Forest.
    3. Go east, through the arches, and across the river. On the far side is an open ruin. (See Map2.)
    4. Wandering around the floor of the ruin is a pair of Unbound Seers. Kill one, and loot a Seer's Crystal from the body.
    5. Return to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:
  3. The Stories Dead Men Tell
Investigation quest to the graveyard east of the Argent Tournament Grounds.

    1. From the eastern side of the Argent Tournament Grounds, not far from the entrance to Sunreaver Pavilion, follow the path going eastward and up the hill until you come to the cemetary [79,22]. (See Map3.)
    2. Locate and search (right-click) the three graves you have been sent to check. (They are hard to miss if you're on the quest - and impossible to find if you're not.)
      • Sir Wendell Balfour's grave
      • Lorien Sunblaze's grave
      • Conall Irongrip's grave
    3. Return to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:
  4. There's Something About the Squire
    Retrieval quest to Crystalsong Forest.

    1. On the southern edge of Crystalsong Forest, east of the Azure Front, and south of the large river, a ruin is marked on the map. Go there. (See Map4.)
    2. Kill a Skeletal Woodcutter, and loot a Large Femur from the corpse.
    3. Target Maloric [38,59], and walk behind him. (Do not attack him!)
    4. "Use" (click) the Large Femur to stun him.
    5. While he is incapacitated, choose the chat option that allows you to search his body, and take his Murderer's Toolkit.
    6. Bring the Murderer's Toolkit back to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:
  5. The Black Knight's Orders
Retrieval quest to get two items from a secret location by using the Black Knight's own mount.

    1. From the eastern side of the Argent Tournament Grounds, not far from the entrance to Sunreaver Pavilion, follow the path going eastward. Instead of going up the hill toward the cemetary, take the branching path to the left (northeast), just past the summoning stone, to the Black Knight's camp [77,21] (the eastern dot on Map5).
    2. Target the Black Knight's gryphon, and "use" (click) the (provided) Enchanted Bridle.
    3. Mounted on the gryphon, you will be taken through the tournament grounds and then, through the air, to a small island off the northern coast of Icecrown (the western dot on Map5).
    4. When you land on the island, kill any attackers, and make your way up the path to the campfire. Dispose of any foes there.
    5. Go inside the tent, and pick up two items:
    6. Leave the tent; get on your own mount; and bring both items back to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:
  6. The Black Knight's Fall
Available only after completing the racially appropriate version of The Valiant's Challenge (example).
Theoretically available at level 78, but as a practical matter it appears you cannot pick up this quest until you are level 80.

Jousting quest to defeat (and kill) the Black Knight at the Ring of Champions using the standard mounted-combat skills:

    1. Thrust
    2. Shield-Breaker
    3. Charge
    4. Defend
    5. Refresh Mount.

    1. Equip a lance, and go to the main stables on the south side of the western wing of the coliseum (the main building).
    2. In the first stall, just beyond the flight point, is the Stabled Argent Warhorse [72,22] (the upper right dot on Map6). (Accept no substitutes.) Mount up!
    3. Find Squire Cavin [71,23] on the west side of the entrance to the Ring of Champions (the lower left dot on Map6).
    4. Click the Defend icon or the 4 key repeatedly until you are surrounded by three green shields. (Refresh as needed.)
    5. When you are ready, talk to Squire Cavin, who will summon the Black Knight.
    6. Defeat the Black Knight in a joust. (This is an easier and shorter fight than jousting a champion.)
      • For further details, advice, and tactics, see Jousting.
    7. The joust has three possible outcomes:
      • You are lucky enough to kill the Black Knight in mounted combat. (This happens occasionally.) Congratulations! You have completed the quest and can skip to the final step.
      • You lose the joust and get dismounted. (This, too, is uncommon - and not necessarily fatal.) Like combat in the Court of Bones, the fight is not over!
      • At low health, facing defeat, the Black Knight dismounts and challenges you to fight him "man to man." Do not dismount at this point! (That will cause the Black Knight to evade and despawn.) Instead, wait for the Black Knight to finish emoting, at which point you will be dismounted automatically.
    8. Replace your lance with your usual weapon(s), and use your standard class skills and spells to finish off the Black Knight.
    9. When the Black Knight is dead, return to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:

Prior to patch 3.2, the chain of quests ended here.

The Black Knight: Part Two

This part of the quest chain, which clearly requires level 80, was added in patch 3.2. Like the previous quests in the series, these start and end with Crusader Rhydalla in the Argent Pavilion.

  1. The Black Knight's Curse
Investigation quest to the Black Knight's grave in the graveyard east of the Argent Tournament Grounds.

    1. From the eastern side of the Argent Tournament Grounds, not far from the entrance to Sunreaver Pavilion, follow the path going eastward and up the hill until you come to the cemetary [79,22]. (See Map3.)
    2. From the entrance, the Black Knight's grave [79,23] is ahead and to the right.
    3. There are two NPCs at the grave site: a Cult Saboteur and a Cult Assassin. Listen while they talk. (That is, read the chat.)
    4. When the Cult Saboteur leaves, the assassin will attack you. Ignore the departing saboteur, and kill the Cult Assassin.
    5. Return to Crusader Rhydalla.

    Rewards:
  2. The Black Knight's Fate
Killing quest to Deathspeaker's Watch [c. 62,21], a new quest area added in patch 3.2.

    1. Fly to Deathspeaker's Watch, west of the tournament grounds.
    2. On the south side of the area, opposite the middle floating pyramid, is a rise - essentially a raised platform - with a large green bubble in the center. (Inside is the Black Knight, but you can ignore him.) Doctor Kohler spawns on the smooth part of the pavement, at a spot [60,22] on the west side of the platform, a few yards from the Black Cage holding Kul the Reckless. (See map.)
      • The fact that he patrols to the east, along the platform, and then returns - repeating this pattern, back and forth, until he is killed - may account for the wide variation of "accurate" locations reported on Wowhead and elsewhere.
    3. Kill Doctor Kohler, and loot Doctor Kohler's Orders.
    4. Return to Crusader Rhydalla.
