Quick Gem Facts

Some Outlands gear contains sockets. Each socket can be filled with a gem (a cut gem) that enhances the item by increasing one or more stats. Once they have learned the appropriate designs, Jewelcrafters can cut raw (uncut) gems in a variety of ways; each cut produces a different effect.

Gems

• Colored gems come in six colors: Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Green, Purple.
• Gem color has nothing to do with gem value. Cut gems of any color may be common (often called "green"), rare (usually called "blue"), or epic (sometimes called "purple").
• Cut gems that match a single socket color (Red, Yellow, or Blue gems) boost only one stat.
• Cut gems that match two socket colors (Orange, Green, or Purple gems) boost two stats or have two effects.
• Uncut gems come from various sources:
  • Mining
  • Prospecting (a Jewelcrafting skill)
  • Drops
  • Quest rewards from the Consortium in Aeris Landing, Nagrand
  • The Auction House or private transactions.
• Cut gems also come from various sources:
  • Jewelcrafting (the primary source)
  • Drops
  • Quest rewards
  • The Auction House or private transactions.

Sockets

• There are four kinds of sockets: Red, Yellow, Blue, and Meta.
• Only cut gems can be socketed.
• Any colored gem can go in any colored socket.
• However, every piece of socketed gear has a "socket bonus."
• To get the socket bonus, all gems on a piece of gear must go into matching (i.e., compatible) sockets:

Meta Gems

• Only a meta gem can go into a meta gem slot or socket.
• At least at this point, only headgear may contain a meta gem slot.
• Each meta gem has a specific requirement for a certain number or proportion of other gems.
  • The requirement covers all equipped gear, not just the helm with the meta gem slot.
  • Unless that requirement is met, the meta gem can be socketed but won't "work."
• The procedure for socketing meta gems is the same as for socketing normal (colored) gems.
• Meta gems are created by Alchemists and cut by Jewelcrafters.

Socketing

• To socket a gem (that is, to add a gem to a piece of socketed gear), you must have the item in view:
  • If you are wearing the item, open up your character display.
  • If the item or the gem is in your backpack, open your backpack.
• Shift-right-click the item (not the gem). That will bring up a special display ("Item Socketing") that shows the available sockets in the item.
• Click and drag the gem into a slot (preferably a compatible slot).
• Repeat for as many gems as you wish to socket.
• When the gems are placed appropriately, click the button marked "Socket Gems" at the bottom of the display.
• You are not required to fill all of the sockets at the same time (or at all, for that matter).
• You can replace a gem after it has been socketed (with a higher-value gem, for instance, or one more appropriate to your class or role). However, the old gem will be destroyed in the process. (This is similar to putting a new enchantment over an old one.)
